How far are we away from having a dedicated Hex option that goes directly to USB?

Then again it says on the website:

Works with any 13-pin device on the market. You may put additional GK pedals before or after the GX-2.

So it ought to work.

Dutti67,
Any news or thoughts on FCC export/import rules and computer peripherals?
Without an FCC export/import license your usb separate strings device cannot be widely sold.

Here’s a nice size/priced box that might work well with on of your Separate-Strings breakout cables. Amazon.com $249, 6 inputs, light weight, small footprint.

my new hex steel project needs an onboard solution, i’d love to have just a single usb cable running between the guitar and the computer.

i’ll need to expand the front cavity or route out a new one on the back.

for rev2 might it be possible to include a usb out? i’d use that to add midi cc controls. probably a headache, but i think a lot of people would use that option.

Thanks Erol, Eagle-eyed find there by you, and the price is very attractive. I would go for that as a breakout cable interface.

@kimyo The thickness of the body is ideal to route a cavity on the back side. If you go close enough to the rim it should be possible to drop the entire HexBox in and just drilling a hole for the USB cable (type B). Some adaptor cable has to be made from the PU to the HexBox input.
I’m not sure what you mean with ā€œUSB outā€.

Hi @Dutti,
For a piggyback thing here is the circuit of your USB transformer (located in the battery compartment of the guitar) in a guitar with active pickups:

Turning a 5 volt USB voltage into a 9 volt voltage for active pickups should be possible with the so-called ā€˜boost, buck, inverting switching regulators’, which should also be available as small microchips e.g. from Texas Instruments, as a friend told me.
Perhaps you can ask an electronics specialist who is more familiar with this.

USB-powered audio interfaces should also be able to provide 48 volt phantom power for microphones in this way, but I’m not an electronics specialist.

Hi @JamO, is there any progress on Mac and Windows in reading USB audio data in raw format without the need for MG3 Audio Asio drivers in further processing? Then perhaps there would be other possible applications for this.

some audio interfaces also act as hubs for usb midi controllers:

i have a tiny usb hub which i intend to use for the winter project.

but almost anyone who is finding / making space for a hexbox on / in their guitar will also want to add some kind of midi cc control.

The HexBox in its current design is not actually intended to be mounted on or inside a guitar. This would require a completely new PCB design that would be much smaller and feature different connector types.

We might think about in the future when the concept has proven.

Hey any notable update on HexBox? Ngl I picked up a gk-3 because of it

@Greq The first prototype wasn’t working out. A new one is in work, can’t give a date yet.

any news about when that interface might become available?

Unfortunately I can’t give any date at the moment. The second prototype is still under development.

Hi Dutti67! Almost two months have passed and I am curious: how is it going with the prototypes ? thanks in advance for any update !

Any recent updates on this? Really would be amazing to go right from my Godin into an iPad running MG3-Hex.

Hello Erol, the development costs far exceed my planned budget. At the moment, I don’t know if or how I can continue. I have not made a final decision yet.

Very sorry to hear that. I appreciate the great effort you put into this. Do you know Robert Fransson at Primova Sound? I wonder if he might have some ideas to help with development, or if it is something he would collaborate with you on? You could contact him through his website. Tell him you and I were speaking about it. Primova Sound - Roland/Boss GK and MIDI products He’s designed and built a number of 13 pin devices, maybe he knows suppliers and developers that could help you.

another good guy might be Peter Knoot, very knowledgeable in constructing 13 pin devices https://www.synquanon.com/products

Yes, I also have Primova stuff. Might be worth a thought! Thanks for your help Erol!
