Legato mode in MG3

Yes I got that I think… this is much easier, if I understand correctly: This is just some logic that bend in chromatic steps whenever possible, instead of triggering new notes.

I have actually a generalisation of this I mind, where the pitch can also bend smoothly around, given the time for transitions from one note to the next, by a knob.

hi
I did not exclude having a pedal function for wider intervals.

I am addressing the music, and the Legato function most often happens within small intervals.
What I seek is to maximize its efficiency.

Guitar Players are only capable of playing legato small intervals. How far can you stretch on the neck of a guitar? a 4th is a practical maximum for a hammer on back/pull off.- and this is the only means guitar players have playing legato. So this is what we seek to replicate in midi guitar.

And in your original example, sliding up the neck, is, in fact, just a series of half steps, And would be part of the Legato function I would seek to perfect.

does this make sense? Thanks, Peter.

Just an opinion:
Sliding up and down the freetboard will not be better adressed with pitch bend ? like a lap steel or a violin?
In the other side for larger intervals (mainly playing different strings) you already can trigger synths legato mode just overlapping a little bit the notes, this how it works in the keyboard.
Just a clarification of the debate:
To trigger the legato mode present in synths and samplers, etc what its expected from the player is a overlapping between notes, then the legato mode is triggered. Is not that what we want to achieve?

Pitch bend sounds very unnatural in my opinion with fretboard slides as opposed to the slight overlap to trigger legato mode. This became very apparent to me when I started using the Linnstrument in legato mode vs sliding with pitch bends. Legato mode is a more natural re-trigger of a note when sliding up and down the pads. For getting pitch bend vibrato on Linnstrument, I trigger pitch bend on and off with a pedal.

So yes we are looking to get the small overlap of notes as to be able to trigger the legato mode of a synth.

cool. I admit am relatively inexperienced with MG2. I started a topic elsewhere with a particular problem I was having that I will spare us here.
I tried your legato mode at a one second delay. (I assumed for the note off.) but did not experience this.
Obviously one second would be a mess if it did work.
I must not be understanding correctly. What Exactly do the delay amounts refer to?
Thank you,
Peter

Following the discussion here, this is what I got right now (for next update):

When this LEGATO module is used, it will try to match note-ons and note-offs and make legato transitions rather than retriggering.

The first option is to steal notes sounding within X semitones. Thats similar to on a keyboard where you can legato by pressing a second note, then release the first.

The second option is to extend notes sustain by X ms. That increase the likelihood that the next note can be captured and legated into, in which case the first note is turned off.

In principle there isn’t any problems with polyphony or bends (which was a problem in MG2), and both options can be turned off. When a note is captured this way, it’s marked as legato, the subsequent modules (ie. your synth) can react to it.

That is pretty awesome!

So looking forward to this. Thanks for listening and being open to suggestions. Very refreshing to have this type of interaction these days.

Looks very interesting, thanks.
Now let have it in windows

Please try out the new LEGATO module.

We are on it! Todays 3.0.48 was indeed motivated to balance CPU load which seems to be much needed for many windows laptops

What balanced looks like on my Lenovo P17 running Win11 Pro. Can’t wait for MIDIBass 2!.

Are you running MG3 in windows?

I got some really good results with U-he Diva and Roli Equator 2, working with this function. (Only Diva in this clip though)

Ha ha. No. That’s from the two apps I was running: Gig Performer and WhatsApp. I just meant it as a thumbs up to the devs for adding that functionality.

Waiting patiently for the Windows version of MIDI Bass 2. I own 1 guitar and 12 basses, so that tells you where I spend my time. I just ordered my 13th bass and first fretless, a Marcustico from Joaquin Marco in Spain. Delivery to me is supposed to be in 280 days. I’m really interested to see how MB2 handles notes specifically played sharp (or flat, take your pick). The superb bassline by Michael Arnopol on Patricia Barber’s “Too Rich For My Blood” starts with the first note 50 cents sharp and the second note 25 cents sharp, before dropping into a solid F major for the rest of the 8+ minutes. I’ve been having to use string bends on a fretted bass to approximate what Michael played on his upright double acoustic.
