Can the VG-800 send MIDI data to MIDI Guitar 3?

Hello, I was wandering if I can program the Vg 800 to send midi data to mg3 with the foot switch that I have and the expression pedal. Or do they have to be midi capable?

Ok I figured out how to use the foot switch but the expression pedal is sending data but not responding in mg3

How are you setting up? Are you using a separate “MIDI Device” module in MG3 to pick up on your VG800 MIDI out, or are you using the “Any MIDI controller” option in the MIDI patch bay?

I have it set up in the patch bay. I managed to set up the cc on the expression 1 in the Vg 800 software. I’m using it to control the whammy module. Everything works except the down and up bottoms of the Vg 800.

Down and up? Are they sending out CCs? And what are you looking to use them for? Patch Up and Down (CC14/15)

A good idea is to get a MIDI Monitor on your computer (outside of any DAW or other software) to check what a particular knob/button/ fader, or pedal is sending out.

I have a couple of different MIDI monitors, but the most compact and easy to use is ShowMIDI by Gert Bevin. If you don’t have one already, here is where you can get one:

You can not assign the up/down knobs of the VG-800 to any MIDI CC message.

Thanks, will check it out.

In the Vg 800 program, there’s an option to assign ccs to the up and down knobs. But when I test it, it sends an initial message but when I press it again it doesn’t respond.

Yes, you can control the VG-800 (also program changes) from other MIDI devices (target: memory +/- , with source: CC#) but you can’t use the up and down buttons to control external gear.

With the good old VG-99 this is possible, there all parameters can be assigned to MIDI controllers. The VG-800, same as the GM-800, have only a selection of parameters that can be assigned.

What you describe can be done in the patch assignments. If you want this to work consistently you have to add two command lines to each patch. It can’t be assigned globally and therefore when you push + or - one time, and the next patch doesn’t have this assignments as well, nothing will happen anymore.

Hahaha…you just have to enable “PC out” in the system settings and MG3 understands it (there you have to select the VG-800 as MIDI controller).

Does this mean that MG3 is receiving MIDI CC data from one of the VG-800’s footswitches?

What MIDI data is the VG-800 sending from the expression pedal?
To where is the data being sent?
How did you verify this?

There is no reason for MG3 not to respond.

Note, in the SY-1000 (I don’t have a VG-800, sorry), you first need to configure the switches/pedals to transmit outbound MIDI. These kinds of settings are generally similar across BOSS devices, so there’s a good chance you’ll see something like this in the VG-800 editor software.
