Full guitar chords vst

Hi guys. What would be the ideal configuration to be able to play a guitar vst on MidiGuitar, playing full chords in a pop ballad and having a nice tracking, or for now does MidiGuitar work better for solos?

Hi Claudio,

It needs careful setup of your Audio Card. Clipping should be rare or absent but a good signal (not too much, not too little) is required.Test and find the sweet spot that works for you. Once you have done that, MG3 is capable to detect your chords nicely. However most of the results depend on the settings of the VST and MG3. The Bend parameter in MG3 must match the one inside the VST or strange pitch fluctuations might occur. Guitar is not a piano or a keyboard so if you strum the chords try also with finger picking (all notes at the same time - at least triads/quads) . As a good addition having a controller for sustain in MG3 will help to keep the chord longer. Hope it helps, Try and enjoy!

PS : The best achievement so far is to use MG3HEX because it works per single string opposed to MG3 that works with no extra Hex Pickup but it’s not mandatory,

MG3 HEX version plays chords wonderfully, even tracks fast strumming fairly well (something I’ve really not had much luck with other pitch to midi converters). I use it in Stand Alone mode with SampleTank instruments and layer the sampled guitar behind my regular guitar for a pretty thick sound.

But for that, do I need to have external equipment?

A guitar with hex output, and a device that takes that output to your computer (like a BOSS GP-10).

it is always best to try mg3 first. results will vary depending on your style and gear.

many users will be able to play ‘full chords in a pop ballad’ without any issue.

try the beta, check your levels and intonation, start with the bridge pickup and tone all the way up.

if you find you cannot achieve the desired results then mg3hex is worth looking at.

also guitar vst’s vary quite a bit in terms of playability, some are more suitable for the studio, others for the stage. this part of the equation doesn’t really have anything to do with mg3 itself.

GP10 has been declared end of life for a while then resurrected by Boss but very hard to find in the shops.
Now the other two current gears that have the USB capability to split your guitar in 8 channels (6 strings + Stereo image) are GM-800 and SY-1000. The price is high and consider you need a GK-5 in the first case and a GK-3 in the second. GP10 used can still be found and also GK-3 pickups.
At NAMM 2025 (soon) it is said that a new device companion of GM-800 and similar to GP-10 will come (in terms of focus, as GM-800 is guitar to MIDI, a Guitar Modeler is expected). Personally I have a GP10 and now Boss is making drivers for it for both Mac Apple Silicon and WIn 11. However it might be a tricky investment now if a successor implementing all new technology comes in January. My Jurassic VG99 was abandoned when Catalina (Mac Os) went out. No 64 bit drivers anymore. Not bad for 2007 device being supported until 2019/2020. GP10 comes around 2014 so take care. It’s an excellent machine and I love it when coupled with MG3HEX does wonders… but I would wait a little or go for a used one at 200 Euros, maybe with a GK3 included.

If MG3HEX was not invented… we would not have had a term of comparison so 100% agree : Try first with MG3 alone.
