Having problems with MG2 in Reaper - Synths stop playing, only guitar processing stays

Starts off playing fine then Synth droppes out - MG guitar processing continues fine.

Seems ok with the suppled VST synths - experiencing this problem with Surge-XT VST3 and some other synths.

Are there any possible settings I could try to stop this.

Note when using MG2 standalone for live playing this does not occur.

I am keen to record with Reaper - but this problem has stumped me.

I even begining to think of somehow recording from reaper standalone into Reaper.

Did you authenticate it? The trial version drops out after a few minutes and ask you to authenticate.

Hmmmm … you mean Reaper … Authenticate … Nope still on a slightly too long Trial …

I like Reaper - I will Purchase I think …

i’m pretty sure jamo means is mg3 authenticated. its normal behavior when not authenticated is to stop output after a few minutes.

if mg3 is authenticated then a first step would be to put a midi monitor before your instrument to see what is incoming.

please provide details on your setup, os, audio interface, etc.

Ahh - Yes - I have authenticated - Bought MG back in its early days - Ver 1 or even Sub 1.
Have not been using much - now very excited as it works so well on my current setup:

Laptop:

Dell i5 10310U 1.7 GHz, 16 GB RAM Win 11 Pro - 1TB SSD

MG - Prefer using Ver 2 for now - 2.2.1 (64 bit)

Audio Interface: M-Audio M-Track Solo USB (ASIO)

DAW: Reaper v7.61 (Still Evaluating)

Have set up Reaper to have Guitar in from M-Audio Solo Input 1 - records Dry Guitar

2nd Track - Input 1 - FX Midi Guitar 2 - records Stereo out.

I did originally send MiDi out to a New Track to record MiDi (decided I dont need this)

The Midi Guitar track only Recorded the Guitar Output - Amp Boogex (VST3) with ValhallaSuperMassive (VST) reverb.

I have afrer the fact tried Duplicate of Track 1 (Dry Guitar) and put it into FX MidiGuitar 2

Synth - SurgeXT (VST3)

The Synth plays for a bit - then on any fiddeling with position within track or pause, adjusting mutes etc - ony MG-2 Guitar Processed sound plays - not Synth.

I have tried with a MG patch that had no Guitar processing - then only dry guitar is recorded.

Have tried to Render/Freeze Track with Dry Guitat with MG-2 FX to both mono and Stereo Stem Tracks…. No Synth..

I have also tried to bring in MG V3.0.68 with only the SurgeXP Synth - did a Render Stem - Synth played/recorded - but with very bad tracking.

Oh - Note that when using MG-2 for live Jamming - RCA audio-out from M-Track-Solo into my mixer (No Reaper) - All works brilliantly well.

Sooo … I am going bald from scratching my head on this.

Any help MOST welcome - many thanks

The drop outs are most likely caused by your sytem.

try running mg3 standalone with surge xt and see if it stops working like in reaper.

post a screenshot of your reaper project.

and please clarify your primary goal, ie: record multiple surge xt tracks, record combined synth/guitar, record midi for post-processing, etc.

ScreenShot attached…

Track 1 - Backtrack

Track 2 - Recorded Wet Guitar - Effects from Pedalboard.

Track 3 - Stem Record of MG Track with TripleCheese Synth - Came out Fine.

Track 4 - Dry Guitar Take - FX = MG-2 - Muted as I have recorded a Stem of output = Track 3.

……………… Basically I want to record the Surge-XT Synth (rather than TripleCheese) and overlay with the Wet Guitar.

In answer your Reply Kimyo (many thanks for your input):

I did test both MG 2 and 3 standalone - SURGE-XT works fine in both (although I need to fine tune MG-3 for optimal tracking)

The problems are when using MG (with Surge-XT and other Synths I have) in Reaper added as effect.

Note - at this point I am using MG-2 as I am comfortable with its interface and have set up quite a few patches in it - and it works great for live performance.

Also - I am still evaluating Reaper - I do like its flexibility and the way I have got the interface to work… Perhaps there is another DAW that can handle MG better?

i believe @Dutti67 is correct and your system is hitting its limits.

other daws are likely to encounter similar issues. but it couldn’t hurt to try another. you seem to have picked up reaper without much trouble, maybe give ardour a try.

but in your situation what i’d try first is to get my hands on a portable multitrack recorder. another option would be a second computer which would run reaper while the primary does the mg3/surge stuff.

wormhole is one of several tools which allow you to record the output of the primary on a secondary without the need for a second audio interface:

Thank you for all the help - Kimyo and Dutti67 :

Yip - I do believe it is my Laptop that is not handeling things very well.

And I will try another way to record the Synths that are misbehaving in my Laptop with Reaper.

…thank you for the Wormhole recomendation - will give that a shot with a second computer…

Also - DAW - Ardour - heard about it yeasterday - will take a look …

You also might want to check out LUNA or Waveform as free DAW alternatives.

Huge thanks Dutti67  :+1: :guitar: :magic_wand:

Oh my Gosh - There is hope - WaveForm seems to play MG2 very nicely …

Free - fantastic - seems so simple to use its hard (if you get my drift):

Draged and dropped the Wave files from Reaper project into WaveForm tracks - imported.

Added effect MG2 to Dry Guitar take and plays Surge synth fine - CPU usage at 17% odd.

Now to test recording the MG2 audio output …

Waveform - sadly recording the Surge Synth seems to be problematic still.

Nevertheless the DAW is great.

I will more than likely do a hybrid of recommendations above…

Some fiddeling to be done … … …

Thanks again guys.

Morning Fiddle - Ardour - works::+1:

Imported audio tracks from Reaper recording - set up VST plugins where required.

Exported Full mix to wav-file - Surge Synth track from MG-2 perfectly in mixdown

So will be using Ardour - will test recording etc.

Main thing is the MG-2 track renders perfectly :magic_wand:

why not record the output of surge xt onto another track during the first pass?

you’d then mute the mg2 track while rendering, which might be a bit faster.

I am very impressed with Ardour DAW.

I will be testing its recording abilities this weekend.

In my first test of Ardour this morning I brought in 3 audio tracks from the Reaper recording I made originally (as in the screenshot I posted in this topic)

I was able to render the full mix with the dry guitar take fed into MG-2 with Surge Synth - It was fine.

But I agree that it would be better to make a render of just the MG-2 generated audio into a new track - this would allow me to edit volume or mute parts to better incoperate into main mix.

Then render just the audio tracks.

Thanks again Kimyo - your advice has been very useful.

I dont think I will be puchasing Reaper - More than likely Ardour DAW will be all I need - have already made a small donation to them.
