How do I use MIDI Guitar 3 with Pro Tools?

Im searching this forum and cannot find clear instructions to route midi guitar 3 into protools… Please help!

I use MG3 with Pro Tools in standalone mode. I create a midi out patch and set the module to MIDI 1.0 Legacy and the pitch bend to the same setting as the VI you want to use (this is usually a bend range of 2 but can be other values if the VI allows for it). This is because Pro Tools does not support MPE (at least as of August 2025). There are rumors that will changes at some point.

Once you set this up in MG3, make sure you have MIDI GUITAR OUT selected in Pro Tools MIDI Input Devices under Settings/MIDI/MIDI Input Devices. MG3 will now control your VIs in Pro Tools.

There is a kludgy workaround to use MPE in Pro Tools, but is pretty involved. I might try to make a video on how to set this up later this week and post when it is available.

I actually prefer to run MG3 in standalone and set the MIDI out from there as apposed to using it as a plugin within the DAW. This makes it much easier to record MIDI in my opinion and control several different DAWs with the same controller settings. This is how external hardware controllers work.

Hi Gil
Are you using a MAC for this setup? I can’t get it to work on my PC at all. Pro tools doesn’t recognize midi guitar 3 at all. I’m using a focusrite 18i8 as the interface and I have MG3 setup for input and output with that unit. Works fine with the MG3 synths.
Thanks

Yes I am on Mac. I need to do some investigation to see how this will work on PC. I will check tomorrow once I’m back in my studio,

Just did a quick search and you might need an app to create a virtual midi port from MG3 to Pro Tools. LoopMidi seems popular, but doesn’t look like it is qualified for Windows 11. This one might do it, SBVMIDI: Springbeats Virtual MIDI driver for Windows®

Works without problems also on win11.

Good to know. I am a Mac guy and didn’t want to recommend something that wouldn’t work.
