Hi folks, I have VG 99, GP 10, nylon string guitar with RMC piezo hex and another guitar with GK 3 - What is the best way to use MG3 in my case? Breakout cable? GP10? Please let me know where I will have better tracking , latency etc - via RMC breakout or GK3-GP10? I am thinking about VG 800 - would it better than GP10 for MG3 input? or breakout cable is the best of all these options? Please also help me with the link to breakout cable if you could! And in the case if simple mono input is even better - could you please tell me which is the best for MG3 - piezo (mono) or magnetic (mono) Thanks!
i’ve never seen anyone compare rmc vs gk in terms of midi note detection.
in theory the rmc’s should provide higher fidelity, which probably will have little effect on midi note detection but will be desirable for mg3’s analog processing features like pitch shifting, sweet spot or deep expressor.
i prefer piezo vs magnetic, but i don’t use palm muting (can be noisy on piezo).
on nylon vs steel, steel wins.
if you have an audio interface, i’d start with the 1/4” magnetic. if not then the gp10 is the way to go. it’s slightly more complicated to setup. mono magnetic will probably give you at least 90% of what you want.
i have two of the separate strings breakout cables. i’m very happy with the quality:
Thanks a lot for your nuanced explanation! Seems like I have to get another guitar then… Because my both guitars with these pickups (RMC and GK3) are acoustic ones…I have a few more guitars but they are pure classical guitars… therefore I have to get and electric one with 1/4 out to start ? And what kind of audio interface do you meant? I usually record right to my zoom H4 (with extra external mics or even just to it’s mics). I performed with VG99 or GP10, but do not really record any midi stuff usually, even in this case (MG3) my main interesting would be to use it in live performing settings as a way to play new interesting sounds rather than in midi recording setup with all its possibilities with which I familiar because I used to record and edit midi stuff in 1991 or so in Atari and then Cubase, but later moved into acoustic stuff and used roland possibilities only for live performance. Thanks again!
i’d try out your existing gear before starting to look for something new.
mg3 will definitely work with nylon on piezo. sustain will be reduced.
it will be useful to you to know what is possible with what you already have.
give the demo a run through and see where you are. once you have a feel for things then maybe borrow a friend’s electric for a weekend and see if it improves things.
Thanks for your advice!
the zoom h4 should work fine.
are you on pc? mac?
it seems you must prefer the sound of nylon strings (me too). live performance with blended nylon/synth may sound better to you than steel strings, even if the steel strings have other advantages.
i knew one could make music on an amiga. i never knew that ataris were similarly capable.
Thanks for your reply! I am on PC. I could play both nylon and steel guitars, and thinking about midi recorder in MG3 sense too, because I play recorder flute too. Atari was my first device of this kind.. before that in 1980s I recorded music in big studios which cost me a fortune… I have seen Amiga, but I managed to get an Atari then and this what google search tells about atari… - Cubase" refers to the original music sequencing software developed by Steinberg for the Atari ST computer in 1989
- that is exactly what I used in 1990 and recorded part of my “Monastery of Dragon” album on atari and roland keyboards then
Spotify – Web Player 2 tracks from it “October song”, “Egypt”
you got some amazing results on the atari, both october song and egypt are quite fine. i like niagara shaman and princess creek as well.
also the medieval stuff sounds great on my speakers. the song playing now makes me think of ralph towner.
i just heard about this product last night - it may be closer to a toy but i think it is worth you taking a look see (unbeatable for a live pop-up street performance with flute/violin):
given your flute chops, buying a breath controller for use with mg3 is a no brainer, i believe you need to get your hands on one immediately if not sooner.
The VG99 can not be used for MG3 Hex but the GP-10 is sending the single string signals via the USB cable to the PC and acts like a breakout cable including audio interface. The VG-800 has no real advantages over the GP-10 if you just want the raw audio steams of the six strings.
