I want to control an external hardware synth from MG3

I have an M2 Mac Minit with a Tascam USB interface with Midi. Assuming that all I want to do is to control the external synth, am I right that all I need to do is to attach the Midi out from Tascam to Midi in on the synth (Arturia Microfreak). What do I need to within MG3 to do this?

Your assumption is correct. In MG3 you can select the “MIDI Guitar Mini” patch. In the “MIDI Output” module just select your Tascam interface. The MIDI output module can also be used in any other patch, it is found under “MIDI Machines”.

Unfortunately on a Mac, you can’t change the virtual midi out in the midi output module. To be able to assign MG3 to physical hardware output, you will need to use a DAW, MainStage, or something like Gig Performer to be able to assign MG3 to a physical midi output. Maybe @JamO can shed some light on why this is not possible with Mac.

Where do I select the Midi device?

Please read @digimidi’s reply to you. You cannot select the output directly in MG3. You need a third party routing tool as suggested. On macOS I ocassionally use a free app from the App Store called MIDIPatch.

I likely am heading down the Reaper road, but it would be good to have a simple patching solution at the ready. Per the reviews of Midipatch (which is now $2.99), may not work with Sequoia. I’ve reached out to the developer to see whether that’s true or not and will report back.

Oh, I thought it was free. I’ve had it for years. It works on Sequoia.

There are plenty of free options. I just mentioned MIDIPatch because it’s very simple, clean and runs in the menu bar.

Anyway, you won’t need it if you’re running Reaper.

I have now moved onto the next layer on this and want to control the Microfreak via the MG3 from inside of Reaper. I’m able to control a VSI, so I’m most the way there. I’m pretty green about Reaper, so forgive my newbiness on this.
