Each time I plug in either my original Apple usbc dongle or a TRSS adapter into my iPhone 16 pro with irig2 as a guitar interface either Midiguitar3 (or 2) won’t recognize an input (no colored lines flashing) or if it does work the iPhone microphone stays on an even raising the gate won’t keep external sound from triggering Midiguitar. Has anyone else experienced this. I saw a post similar to mine from 2019 but the issue wasn’t resolved as far as I could tell. Cheers!
If I understand correctly, the problem is that MG2/MG3 is either not seeing the iRig 2 input at all, or it is seeing an input but appears to be using the iPhone’s built-in microphone instead of the iRig. Correct?
The first thing I’d check is whether iOS is actually recognising the iRig as an audio input device. The iRig 2 is an analogue TRRS interface rather than a USB audio interface, so with a USB-C iPhone, the exact adapter/converter chain is important.
The difficulty is that you’re trying to connect a legacy interface, designed for iPhones with a built-in headset jack, to a modern USB-C iPhone via one or more adapters. That puts things in somewhat murky waters, because most people developing and testing iOS audio apps in 2026 are doing so with current hardware and USB audio interfaces rather than legacy analogue headset interfaces.
Anyway, when problems like this arise, I always suggest trying the iRig in another audio app and confirming whether the guitar is actually reaching the iPhone through the iRig rather than through the built-in microphone. If the built-in mic is still active in other apps as well, then the problem is probably with the iRig, adapter chain, or iOS audio configuration rather than MIDI Guitar itself.
It would also help if you could specify exactly which Apple USB-C adapter(s) and TRRS adapter you’re using, and how everything is connected.
Thanks so much for your help. Yes at first everything was working swimmingly when I first started using my iPhone 16 with the Apple brand headphone jack. No problem with input.
Out of the blue the next day everything stopped working so I kept trying MG2 and MG3 with no success. After consulting ChatGPT I tried different settings in the iOS microphone haptics. The furthest I’ve gotten is to get some kind of input when I tap “forget usb devices” but the phone’s microphone stays on while MG3 shows flashing on the guitar graphic in reaction to strumming or any external sounds like the sound of my voice. I found an old iPhone12 mini and plugged in everything using the Apple dongle and it worked. I decided to unplug my electric guitar to try my Cordoba fusion 12 CE and something got “tripped” back to nothing again.
I’ve tried using the same iPhone configuration with Tonebridge, Amplitude amps and GarageBand amps and the same thing happens-no input
Just to check , I also plugged everything into my old M1 MacBook Air and used the amps in GarageBand with no issues-works perfectly.
After searching the web for an answer, someone on Reddit suggested the StarTech.com 5in (12.7cm) USB-C to 3.5mm TRRS Headphone/Headset Jack Audio Adapter, 32-bit DAC, USB C Aux Dongle for PC/Phone and it worked perfectly for about a couple of days and then again out of the blue nothing😩.
Again, I really appreciate your assistance ![]()
