Less good tracking on lower strings using built-in hex piezo pickup

Hi,

I’ve been using the 3.0.66 version for a efw days in combination with my Brian Moore guitar and a SY-1000 and I’m pretty impressed. I’m having a few hickups with notes that don’t always track that well and I do have to adjust my playing style but overal, it’s a very interesting ride.

One thing that does bother me is that the lower notes seem to track way worse. When I’m playing fast notes or playing more percussive stuff, the notes often don’t seem to register or track very well.

Are there ways to fix this inside of Midi Guitar 3 or should I look into other options? The volume per string is set correctly in the SY-1000 so I don’t see how I can improve on this.

Thanks!

it’s worth checking your intonation if you haven’t done that lately.

but ‘percussive’ may be the key word here. mg3 does like things to be as clean and tidy as possible.

if you post an audio snippet of the raw guitar input that is usually the easiest way to get help with this type of issue.

Might have to check intonation yes. Although it seems fine. Low notes seem to also vary a lot in velocity, altough the playing is tight.

I’ll look into recording dry signal and hex at the same time.

Apparently I’m not able to post files as a new user, so underneath is a GD link to a recording of the piezo signal and the synth signal. At the end it’s quite clear with the low notes.

It feels a bit unnesecasry to post all of this stuff since there’s probably a whole team of people test driving this stuff daily, but still…

The synth sound is set to max velocity, which helps with the double triggers, since the faulty notes are mostly on a way lover velocity.

Is there something I can do with my setup based on the dry recording of my guitar? Does it sound off?

Thanks!

Here it’s quite clear that there are lower velocity ghost notes when playing. I’ve managed to work around this by using polyphonic synths with very high velocity. In some playing styles these ghost notes might be normal but sometimes, as with the note off values that seem to trigger accidently sometimes, it seems faulty.

If anyone has recommendations for my setup, shoot!

i see what you’re saying, at 2:17 and 2:20 there are clear notes on the piezo track which are not registered at all in the synth track.

what settings are you using for gain and gate?

the overall piezo volume seems a little low, this is probably not your issue but if it can be boosted it is worth doing so.

in order to reduce the ghost notes try a strike filter, probably set kind of low.

from 0:55 to 1:19 i’d say you’re mostly on the low strings and picking relatively fast, but getting no errors. does it seem that way to you too?

also not an issue re: your problem but i think your d and g strings maybe a bit lower in volume than the others.

if you have a second audio interface i’d be interested to hear what happens when the brian moore is plugged in directly (i assume it has a 1/4” jack?).

in terms of voodoo options ghost notes can originate from the bit of the strings past the nut or below the bridge. some people use foam, there’s also various wraps etc. some say that flatwound strings will present less noise.
