I have a Lightwave guitar with 13 pin cable. I’d like to control my Osmose synthesizer with MPE using the Lightwave via my PC. (I also have a Roland GR-33 and VR-88 if that helps). What cables do I need and where do they need to be connected? I’d really like to avoid buying too many other things but if it’s required then… THANKS!
Is it an Atlantis HexFX guitar you have? If so, you need either a Roland/Boss synth (GP-10, SY-1000, GM-800 or VG-800 – per-string USB audio streams) to use it with the 13-pin cable. The second option is that you buy or make a breakout cable (13-pin to 6 x TSR) and connect it to a 6-channel or higher audio interface.
Edit: in addition, you need a USB MIDI interface (such as the Roland UM-One Mk II) to control hardware synths via a PC.
If you already have a multichannel audio interface (8 channels) it will most likely have midi out on it also so all you will need is the breakout cable. See more info on it here:
But before going all out with the hex, try the regular version. Take any guitar with mono output, plug into your audio interface, into MG3 then go out with a midi cable into osmose. Even though it’s not HEX you can still send out MPE to osmose and if you couple it with lets say two USB expression pedals or a breath controller you will be surprised how much control you can get out of the osmose.
Would the Roland GR55 work?
It is the Atlantis HexFX. I’m looking at selling other items to afford another device. I have a VG88 and a GR33.
The Roland GR-55 will not work for MG3 Hex since it doesn’t output the single string signals, just the main out. For the VG-88 and GR-33 applies the same. You need to go the “breakout cable / 6-CH audio interface” way, or using any of the aforementioned devices in combination with the 13-pin cable.
unfortunately none of these will give you 6 independent channels: vg-88, gr-33 or gr-55.
the sy-1000 and the gp-10 will work with the atlantis hexfx. i’m pretty sure the gm800 and the vg800 will require an additional adapter.
unless you have a need for the boss device features a breakout cable is the simplest option. you’ll also need a multi channel audio interface such at the behringer umc1820 (~$200).
Good point!
These two devices expect digital signals as input. The analog signals sent through a 13-pin cable need to get digitalized as a first step. The GKC-AD converter and a special cable are needed in addition (plus approx. 280 USD).
