I’ve been using Midi Guitar 2 on Windows 8 for several years now but have recently started running into the dreaded 'this application only works on Windows 10/11…). I don’t particularly want to run Windows anything, if I can help it, so I was considering switching to a Mac (mini?), but I don’t know if that’s a better choice or just replacing one ‘evil corporation’ OS with another. Linux doesn’t appear to be an option.
I don’t plan to use the Mac for anything other than MG3 and possibly Garage Band. Thanks for any feedback.
MG3 is obviously compatible with Windows 10, MacOS 11.0 and newer. I don’t plan on Linux, but I always keep OS dependencies at a bare minimum and so it may actually work with Wine.
My DAW runs an absolutely stripped down instance of Windows 11 Pro installed on what started out as a relatively inexpensive Dell XPS 8940 that’s never crashed, no matter how I’ve pushed it.
I run Ableton Live, Reaper, supporting Kontakt with my current favorites virtual synths and effects by Arturia.
My audio interface is an Arturia MiniFUSE 2 with a CME WIDI I/O plugged into the MIDI DIN socket.
Lately, I’ve leaned increasingly on using MuseScore Studio Pro for capturing MIDI, composing and arrangement because seeing the notes as a score “feels” good. I’m a few weeks short of 68 and started playing in public during the 1960, so I’m an odd combination of ancient and really new.
Anyway, here’s a link to the how-to guide I used for optimizing Windows 10 by Pete Brown, Microsoft development lead for MIDI 2.0, and board chairman in collaboration with president Athan BIllias at the MIDI Association.
