MG3 and HX Stomp as an audio interface - Mute input audio to hear only the MIDI instrument

Dear fellow musicians,

I’m using the HX Stomp as an audio interface with Logic Pro X 11 on my MacBook M2 Max. On my current track, I’m working with the Ample Double Bass instrument, but I’d like to mute the actual guitar input so I can hear only the bass. However, I haven’t been able to find a way to do this. A mute audio input function must exist somewhere—it’s such an essential feature! If anyone knows how to do this, please enlighten me.

Also, I have another question: In MG2, I could set it up on an audio track, and it would listen for MIDI input from other instruments. For example, if a Kontakt instrument sent MIDI on Channel 1, MG2 would pick it up and play the instrument accordingly. However, in MG3, I can’t seem to find a way to do this—it looks like it only listens to its own audio track. Is there a way to get MG3 to receive MIDI from other instrument tracks in Logic Pro X?

I’d really appreciate any guidance you can offer. Thanks in advance!

Best,
Thomas

  1. I’m not a Helix user (other than Helix Native) so I’m just gonna take a guess at how you would probably do this. First of all, create a preset with no FX blocks and zero output — maybe use some kind of volume device to reduce the volume to 0. Next, send the DI signal from USB 5/6 to MG3. Done. If you still hear audio it’s an issue with how you’re using monitoring in Logic Pro rather than the Helix. No doubt you’ve already read pages 44-46 of the HX Stomp manual.

  2. I have absolutely no idea why you would want MG2 or 3 to be listening specifically to MIDI note data from another source. Can you explain the use case a little more clearly?

Ref. to 1.
You mean sending audio from the “send” bus of the Helxi to MG2. Good idea! I will try that.
Ref. 2 Maybe my explanaition was shitty… What I mean is, when I want to record a e.g. a double bass for a track I don’t want to hear the guitar signal the same time. So I wanna mute the guitar signal for hearing only the double bass instrument precisely.
Concerning how to make MG3 listeing to other tracks I found a helpful video on youtube. This is already solved. My mistake was, that I started with a stereo audio track but it should be a mono track meanwhile the MG3 should be used in the mono-> stereo mode. After this it was as expacted only I still can’t mute the original guitar signal if I need to do so.

It’s a bit hard to follow the train of thought in the last post. So I’ll just add a little for clarity regarding your original points:

  1. I wouldn’t call it a send bus, but regardless, these are the only USB channels (5 or 6) you likely want to receive a D.I. guitar signal from to feed MG2 in your DAW. And, yes, the point of doing this is so you won’t have a duplicate of your direct signal at the point where you are monitoring the master output, unless you specify that through your DAW.

  2. I still have no idea what you mean, but that hardly matters if you’ve already solved your problem. All I can say is that if you’re hearing your dry guitar signal when you don’t want to, you’re not doing things optimally. Regardless of which DAW or general audio application I’m using with guitar (including MG2/3 standalone versions) I never hear the D.I. and would most likely never want to except as a playback reference if recording.

Thanks, I have an HX Stomp with an additional MIDI pedal switch connected to it, and was just starting to think about this myself. My plan is to treat myself to a Morningstar MC6 PRO MIDI controller pedal, before deeply researching and experimenting with that part of my MIDI controlled signal path.

Sorry for mixing up the things. I am using now USB channels 5&6 of the helix to receive direct signal. It works well so far and solved my “issues”. Ref. to 2. this was solved also. It’s all working fine now. Thanks for your kind support. That was really quick!!!
