MIDI FretLab - The ultimate pitch software for your guitar?

In this video I go over the basic functions I have settled for, for the MIDI FretLab. Open String Tunings, Virtual Capo, A completely software based editable microtonal fretboard to build you own personalized never-before seen fretboards. These will have effect on the MIDI or AUDIO output, depending on how you set up. You will need a hexaphonic pickup and some way of getting the six audio streams from that pickup into your computer (and into the MIDI Guitar 3 HexTracker ) for this to work.
Besides the Microtonally adjustable fretboard you can also create almost any EDO fretboard with this as well,. Especially interesting for anyone into Angine de Poitrine, perhaps.
You also have a virtual whammy that will work as a B-bender, G–bender, GB-bender or pedal steel if you like. All of these can be combined into Instruments and called up from editable playlists.
There is so much more to come, and I can’t wait to hear what things I haven’t thought of yet. So I say, …Finished?

This project is well underway now and looks really interesting!
To be able to suggest improvements, we need to “play” with it.
Your Patreon only has information, not the Lua script…
Is there a way to try it out, or even buy it?

Hey @lofeif, looking very nice. Might I ask, how have you managed to get your app talking back to MG3? I’ve read through the API material and while I can send parameter values to display text in the MG3 UI I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get any of those messages to actually attach to a parameter in MG3.

I have some ideas for Scale Demon-MG3 interactions but I’m stuck in Lua hell! :smiling_face_with_horns:

after watching the video i find it difficult to imagine that you’ve left anything out.

i’d say it is finished. it even looks like a 2.0 release, there’s nothing beta about it.

i am really looking forward to using the true temperament option.

i bet your friends have been saying ‘where’s lofileif?’ for months now.

cpu-wise, mg3hex had a little bit of trouble when i combined string retuning with the chord shifter. it seems like fretlab may also be affected by this type of thing, is that the case?

Yes, I will probably have it out on a small scale test run soon on my Patreon, but there are still some unnecessary chinks in the code I want to get rid of first. I ‘ll be sure to let everyone know when it is available. :+1:

That is just it. I felt I only scratched the surface here. I probably managed to get most of the main features into that little presentation, but it is the small stuff you haven’t seen yet that Is most exiting to me now (but then I have been working on this for a while :grinning_face: )

Now, I have actually been working a crazy hour job almost all summer (with days from 7am to 9pm), and I have had only two weeks vacation (ending yesterday), so anyone asking where I have been have only had to look in two places really. My workplace or my code cave (2nd workplace).

I’m glad to hear of your interest in the squiggly frets (we can’t call it anything else I am afraid. That would probably be copyright infringement. But it would be interesting to know if you with your keen ear could actually hear the improvement. One has to overcome (isolate) the obvious real string ringing issue and only listen to the output, but I am pretty sure anyone with a hardtail instrument that is particularly intonation resistant will be able to create a big difference for them selves.

I have not had the feeling that my sometimes four dimensional pitch shifting is affecting CPU performance, other than perhaps when I run two of these dimensions as Morphs with the built-in LFOs (Not yet showcased feature).

I would be interested to hear if this was true for you as well? I hope to get time to get it solid enough for letting you test it soon. As I said above, I’ll let you guys know as soon as I have something. :+1:

this is what i am most curious about. and fretlab is the perfect tool to output side-by-side comparisons.

i’ve heard some squiggly fret classical guitar recordings which sounds ‘better’ to me, but i wonder if the same will be true of pop/rock/blues.

I’m sure much of this will also inspire @JamO to expand or improve MidiGuitar.

This is especially true if @JamO decides to create a new MidiGuitar 3 Standard with single-string recognition, which would then make these HEX functions available to a much larger user base than before.

I have, as of yet, not seen a single software solution even getting close to this. The six separate audio streams from the Hexaphonic pickups are sort the guarantor for this to work at the moment, but I would of corse be happy to revise my belief in its necessity in the face of some hard evidence to the contrary. :+1:

It’s worth reading this thread in its entirety to find out what’s now possible in terms of single-string recognition from a guitar’s mono signal.

That’s also the basis for my confidence that there will be a new MidiGuitar 3 standard with single-string recognition in the foreseeable future.

Not only because it now seems technically feasible, but also because the Hex functions make it infinitely more powerful for all guitar players, as your latest work demonstrates. :flexed_biceps:
