I would just add, those MIDI external devices are required to make hardware (like the SH-01) or virtual devices (like MG2 Standalone) available in Studio One. Also, MG2 AU will almost certainly require that setting to transmit MIDI — it does in other DAWs. But the VST2 should be able to transmit MIDI directly within the DAW — it doesn’t create a “visible” virtual MIDI port. So, the simplest path is probably to use the VST2 in your case, since you’re on an older Intel Mac. Good luck with it all.
