I’m trying to see if MIDI Guitar 2 will work with some custom software I’ve been using. The biggest hangup right now is I cannot select an output device. I know before 2.2.1 there was an “external device” option in MIDI Machines, and that is now gone.
When I go to select my output, I only get “none” as the option. Even when attempting to select known working software like Reaper.
MIDI outputs are either virtual ports or hardware devices connected to your computer. If you don’t have any of those connections on your system MG2 will show “none” under selections.
If you insert MG2 on an audio track in e.g. Reaper it will output MIDI to the DAW.
Whether the software you use is “custom” or not is irrelevant. As @Dutti67 pointed out, virtual or physical hardware ports must be present for MG2 to have anything to detect.
But, could it be that the trial version of MG2 doesn’t offer virtual MIDI output? I do noyt know the answer to that. In the full paid version, the following Virtual MIDI output is present. See below:
BTW, have you considered trying MG3? I think that would circumvent your problem and give you a whole lot more to work with. You’re still on the trial version of MG2 anyway, so nothing to lose.
I was initially looking for something like the virtual midi output, but I actually found a piece of software called LoopMIDI that acts like a physical port that I can connect to MG2 and my software, and it worked perfectly.
loopMIDI worked perfectly on my Windows installation until a recent update. Since I participate in the Insider Program, I can’t say whether the regular updates are also affected. In fact, the virtual ports are no longer displayed on my system. I reported this to Microsoft, but the process is very slow.
