Dear developers, first of all I am using MG since many years and I am very happy about all the options it’s given me.
There is only one problem I am having with it all the time: when I play and hold a single note on the guitar to produce a sound with a synth, the tone get’s cut off too early. E.g. when I want to play a whole note for a bar the tone get’s cut off already in the middle of the bar. It sounds like a hard gate and there is no nice release as I would have it, when I play the same note into the same synth with a midi keyboard. When using the guitar via MG3 the cut off sounds pretty harsh and the only little work around is to have a reverb with a long tail on that sound. But that’s not the same like a sustained note with a nice and natural fade out at the end of the tone/sound as I have it, when I use the midi keyboard.
What am I missing, what can I do to get a nice sustain on longer notes?
I am using a Mac M2 Max, a RME Fireface UCX, Logic Pro X and e.g. Omnisphere as a synth.
Any good advice would be very very welcome
That is very unusual that you can’t hold a note for a full bar. Just to give you some idea about the sustain values I have here. Introduction patch with monophonic tracking let the test Synth sound for 12 seconds (E4 picked on the 7th fret of the G string). The input level is set that with a moderate pick of the string the gate indicator reaches about 80%. In other words if you hit around 80% with your picking strength (no matter what your input level is) the test synth should sound for 12 seconds. Maybe you can compare these on your system?
I will try that and report back what happened
Yes! If I use the “default settings” from the Introduction of MG3, set to monophonic, the E4 on the 7th fret of the A-String rings longer but for sure not 12 seconds. When I play the 7th fret of the E string (tone B) the correct tone rings first then MG3 produces wrong random notes when the tone changes from sustain to relase.
On the higher Strings going up the frets all midi sounds much shorter than the guitar string rings. But as I said, I also get artifacts when using the low E-String on the 7th fret.
BTW, I am using a Godin Multiac nylon which has a pretty decent sustain and a cool preamp onboard. Additionally I have set good input gain on my fireface to support the MG3 with good inpout level.
Sorry, now I got you. I play the E4 on 7th fret of the g-string and first get a correct E4 from the synth but the tone is also not 12 seconds. It’s more or less 4 seconds and during relaese phase it sounds like a gate disassambels the sounds in the release phase of the tone. No nice natural fade out….
The gate function in MG3 is set to zero but it sounds like still a gate is active
probably the primary issue is the nylon strings. steel strings are tuned to a higher tension and thus have more energy.
if you have a steel string guitar to experiment with you’d be able to confirm that the hardware/software is not the issue.
on the random note issue, although you cannot adjust the intonation, i wonder what you’d find if you tested it.
I see…. Thanks for your kin replies
