MIDI Guitar 3 & The Best Virtual Guitars and MIDI Controller 2024

There has been this suggestion in here that we share information on whatever software works best for us with MIDI Guitar 2/3. In the spirit of such requests I started with compiling a list in this video pointing primarily at the acoustic virtual instruments on the market, together with some particular strategies (in some cases) to make them work the best. I would love to hear/see other suggetions as well.

Oh my, so many doors to open and explore. Great episode, and thanks for sharing the performance at the end.

You mentioned you like the Ample Bass TR6.
How is it tuned?
Is it BEADGC or BEADGB?

If so how does that work with guitar?
And how do you go as low as B0?
Do you just shift everything down from E1 to B0?
It gets a little confusingā€¦ no?

It seems to be BEADGC, but it really doesnā€™t matter for my MIDI guitar playing. Perhaps it does if you are crazy into playing exactly the same chord figures as someone using that bass. But for me it just means there are some lower notes (the stuff below my low E) that I canā€™t play right now. My E2 to D#6 match pitches E1 to D#5 (i guess?) on the bass, and that is good enough for me.

Wonderful video @LoFiLeiF , have you found any virtual instruments that do not work with MPEfy? Wondering how it might function with Kontakt Player as it might be very cool with Orange Tree Samples. Thanks in advance!

Thanks Victor!
Well, I have a few instances of instruments that crashes MPEfy. But it is stuff like WIVI orchestra perhaps. I have to go over and check more thoroughly if there are a lot of people interested. But OTS instruments? Why? They are already polybend instruments. (They handle polyphonic bends, pressure, and velocity) You donā€™t need MPEfy for those. Just load them as a standard (1) instance instrument.

MPEfy works with Kontakt though, but of course only with instruments that has bends allowed.

ah okay, I wasnā€™t aware! I donā€™t own the OTS instruments yet. Thanks!

I didnā€™t either until just recently!

iā€™d been resisting buying kontakt for ages but this video pushed me over the edge.

for anyone else on the fence, if you install and register the free library ā€˜ProjectSAM - The Free Orchestraā€™ you can purchase kontakt for $99, discounted from the already discounted $149 sale price.

thanks for this video, the instruments you create are very inspiring.

Thanks @kimyo
I know the Kontakt reluctance all too well, but I have gravitated toward the realization that it is probably mostly a question of the instruments developers at this point. I donā€™t know if Kontakt will ever support true MPE (whatever that may be), but there have been attempts like the Slate & Ash Instruments as well as with polybends instruments like the OrangeTreeSamples, so I havent given up on it working for us a s a tool among others.
Glad to see it at a reasonable price too. :grinning: :+1:

There the point is that if one buys ā€œonlyā€ Kontakt 7 the instruments coming with it are very limited and each additional instrument can cost quite some money. For the price of 3-4 add-on instruments itā€™s already worth to think about a ā€œKompleteā€ bundle, where Kontakt has more instruments included (varies on the bundle type).

I bought Kontakt on its own because, for my use, there are very few instruments in the Komplete that would interest me and because I paid ā‚¬49 for it during a ā€œflash saleā€.

I bought Komplete v9 way back when it was first released. Iā€™ve never upgraded it for the reason you state. I have paid for the v6 and v7 Kontakt upgrades and I have bought a few specific instruments over the years. Iā€™m also really happy to have a license for Absynth v5 that came with Komplete v9. Too bad NI dropped it from the latest Komplete (v14?). The French dev seems like a terrific person. Iā€™ve purchased the Plasmonic synth and still-in-beta FX plugin Synestia directly from his Rhizomatic company.

I got the Upright bass, the 6 string John Patitucci bass and the Jaco Pastorius fretless bass for an OKā€™ish combo deal.
The Jaco is my favorite, very expressive for soloing.
Now I need to program my pedals so I can do even more with it.
So far I only use the CC1 for extra fretless vibrato action.
I also noticed that on very fast phrashing the ( // ) articulation is very much needed, I wish I had momentary switch foot controller, I will have to try to program the FCB1010 now.

Yeah, they are really great instruments. And sure, some settings affect the performance quite a lot. (Scripted) Vibrato is not anything I use normally for any instruments that allow for bends and thus guitar vibrato, but that is a matter of taste, of course. And I assume the (//) refers to the Keyboard Mode? That is what I use too, and is what has proven to work best for my kind of mock MPE setup. More than that, I often feel I gain a sense of better control when I use a MG3 Dynamics Module before it. Both the dynamic compression (COMPRESS) and dynamic balance (TONE) can be used here.

Yes manual vibrato all the way but on the fretless bass, when you hold a long note and hit CC1 it will do this slow ramping up to the note thing that makes it very clear that you are playing a fretless bass and not a regular bass.

The ( // ) refers to the articulation (Repeat: Keyswitch F#0).
I know itā€™s for fast repeating notes but I find it very realistic on all fast phrasings that sometimes can sound unrealistic (machine gun like effect)

hi-
in your experience, what is the best sounding and most playable Flute or alto flute?
I do a lot of brazilian music and it works very well for that. Currently i use a yamaha Motif es from 30 years ago!
thanks,
Peter

Have you checked out the Silvewood flute in Reaktor. It is free and it is crazy expressive.

You can find it here:

https://www.native-instruments.com/en/reaktor-community/reaktor-user-library/

But Reaktor isnā€™t free, or youā€™ll need to own it already.
On the other hand, if quality is the most important thing and price is not, itā€™s certainly a good choice, and I trust your good judgement. :slightly_smiling_face:
