I’ve been building Guitar Trainer Studio for my own guitar practice and have shared it on GitHub as a free, open-source project. My main goal was simple: an app that receives MIDI from my guitar and waits for the correct notes before moving forward. I picked up a license for MG3 to test, but I’d appreciate feedback from other MIDI Guitar users.
It runs in a browser and uses alphaTab to display notation/tab and play scores. You can load Guitar Pro or MusicXML files, slow down passages, loop sections, and use an optional virtual fretboard.
Wait mode stays on the current note or chord until the required pitches arrive. Chords can be collected one note at a time or played within a chosen timing window. Realtime mode follows the tempo and provides performance feedback. It also supports manually synchronizing audio/video recordings with a score.
I’ve been using MIDI Guitar 3 with it and have found it useful for working through passages slowly. Some chords register more reliably in my setup with a gentle rake across the strings. Wait’s One at a time setting allows gradual collection; Together still requires the attacks within its selected timing window. I’m curious if anyone here has advice on making all of the notes come across on a quicker full strum (if I strum too fast, I often miss one of the notes on the MIDI out). Overall it’s working pretty well though.
The app receives MIDI from your existing hardware/software setup—it does not convert guitar audio itself. Route MIDI Guitar’s output to an input your browser can select, and use the app’s Poly mode for ordinary audio-to-MIDI output. For anybody using HEX, the app settings allow for this and will give detailed string/fret feedback. I’ve tested with a Fishman Tripleplay but don’t have a pickup for MG3 Hex. I’ve tested in Chrome as it allows for MIDI. If you’re on an iPad, Web MIDI Browser will allow for this.
This is Beta, so please expect rough edges. Tracking errors can produce extra or missing notes and misleading performance feedback. There are adjustable MIDI tolerances and independent visual-feedback controls, so you can simplify the display if detailed feedback becomes distracting. Hiding feedback does not change grading or make Wait accept missing notes. The app currently grades pitch rather than exact physical string/fret position.
This is an independent project, so I’m the only person to have tested so far. Would anyone here find it useful for practice? I’d particularly appreciate feedback on MIDI routing, repeated notes and chords, useful tolerance settings, and anything confusing during setup. Please mention your MIDI Guitar version, operating system and browser if you try it.
