MPE How to? MG3 + Studio One Pro 7

What are the steps to setup and use MG3 vst3 MPE in Studio One?

  • The Studio One developers monitor this.

The setup for the AU version is at the beginning of the video. I’ve linked to the VST setup. The video is for SO1 Pro v6, but will be the same for v7.

**Studio One Pro 7 is now available, Does it have the same same MG3 MPE issue as version 6?

Not sure what “AU” is.These are the only files found:
MIDI Guitar 3.dll
MIDI Guitar 3.vst3

Tested MG2 and with this setup, works as expected.

Audio Units (AU ) are a system-level plug-in architecture provided by Core Audio in Apple’s macOS and iOS operating systems.

So, Audio Units is and Apple thing, that’s why you don’t see them.

It doesn’t appear as if Presonus have done any significant changes that would relevant for improving the MPE handling here. I don’t have the SO7, but I am looking at their description here, and it looks very much like the same architecture that was the problem in SO6.

Maybe there is an solution with the new ways of sending the MIDI OUT from MG3, but the safest bet is probably to set up MG3 in Standalone outside of SO7 and create a “new keyboard” (checking the MPE box) from the MIDI OUT you have there.

Thank you for the response…
I’m learning Studio One Pro 7 DEMO, considering moving from Cakewalk.
There are two weeks left I can ask tech support, What types of questions should I ask for getting SOP7 to work with MG3?

The thing you need for the MG3 plugin version to work directly in SO7 is that they allow for MIDI/MPE to be passed on directly from an AUDIO channel (where it is created in MG3 now) without having to send it to be configured adding this “NEW keyboard” just to be able to use MPE.

I am not saying this is neccesarily the only way of solving this, but it is waht is needed for the “Sending MIDI out to the track” or “Direct MIDI output” (same thing, two different names) to work.

I have not tried MG2 or 3 with Studio One 7 yet, but I have two MPE controllers that never worked reliably with it until I found this setting: https://studiooneforum.com/threads/mpe-pitch-issues.454/#post-6028

Apparently by default Studio One discards half of the MPE data stream to keep old CPUs happy. Once you set REDUCTION to zero, it will record all of the MPE data.

Yes, I recall getting some dubious results with SO6 MPE, once I found a way to get the MG3 AU to work with it. Perhaps the REDUCTION would have solved some of those. Great piece of info, thanks. :+1:

So far, SOP7, set REDUCTION to zero did not work. MG3 with MPE active, there is no sound.
“MIDI 1.0 LEGACY” is the only way (so far) to get MG3 to work.

Yeah, so the REDUCTION trick probably only work for use with outside (external) MPE controllers. It will not make a difference for the SO7 issue of not sending MPE MIDI from an audio channel directly to a software instrument/MIDI channel.
Did you try sending MPE to SO7 from MG3 in standalone mode from outside SO7?

I’ll pin this to the top.

well, I was going to test your standalone idea, yet havean issue with SURGE XT opening the Input Audio.

Using the MG3 as a standalone, in this case, simply means that you are getting your MPE/MIDI from a source outside of SO7. You don’t need to have any other software open to test if SO7 works with MG3 as an external MPE controller (which it should).

I don’t use Windows myself, so I am always unsure of if you need to add something like LoopBe to be able to send the MIDI OUT from your MG3 in standalone. But I am sure that the kind people in here can point to the best avalible solution for windsows users.

But basically, you should be able to open MG3 in standalone, and use the “MIDI Guitar MINI” patch, to drive an MPE synth in SO7.
