in terms of the os, win11 pro will give you increased control. unfortunately this is also the more expensive option.
this article offers some examples (like being able to pause updates or stop them entirely):
as it is written by an obvious microsoft fanboi (elsewhere he tries to plug putting microsoft edge on your music pc, please stop it hurt my brains) the article avoids altogether explaining why one wants to stop windows from borking itself just before a weekend full of gigs. it’s as if he has no real world experience.
I am suffering right now, my Surface pro 4 (circa 2015) has been my midi guitar work horse since then for both MG 2 and 3.
The poor old thing struggles with MG 3 with CPU overloads and over heating symptoms. With windows 10’s ultimate demise, I thought it would be wise to invest in the latest version of this wonderful computer. I opted for the top of the line Surface Pro 11 with the 12 core Snapdragon Elite ARM processor. Lots of memory Oled screen etc.
Up to this point, I have been unable to install MG 3. I am heartbroken. I’m sure at some point it may be possible but even Jamo hasn’t been able to help me yet. If anyone can help please post. I love this software. I don’t consider myself a power user and definitely not a computer expert.
a friend had a surface pro and it would overheat even when it was ‘off’. there is something funky about the earlier models.
the likely issue with your new surface pro is the arm processor. it is probably running in emulation mode for programs like mg3. less likely but still possible is the ‘secured core’ feature.
if the former i don’t think there’s much hope. the latter can be disabled.
if the new surface can be returned that’s what i would do.
if i were looking for a laptop today i’d pick up a refurbished win10 system, even if i had a $1k+ budget. i can be pretty certain mg3 will work fine on win10 if i strip out all the useless extras.
i can’t be as certain of mg3’s performance on win11. and i have no control over whatever microsoft will choose to gunk the system up with in the future.
i have a feeling that maintaining an operational music system using win11 is going to eat up at least half of the time i have to available to make music.
Thanks Kimyo, I hope that something can be done with the new computer to make it compatible with mg3. I’ll have to look into disableing that secured core feature or that Jamo can come up with an update that will make it compatible.
