How can I make use of the pattern key switches in the Iinstruments of NIS Kontakt Player with Midi Guitar 3, using a midi controller, for example a pedal ?
I would very much appreciate a solution!
Best Regards -
G.
That is not as easy as it might sound. Just in the standalone mode it’s not possible unless you sacrifice a string only for key switches. Then you need a pitch shifter to match the played note on the string with the expected key switch note. Whenever you hit a “trigger” note by mistake Kontakt will change accordingly.
In a DAW or in a other host it’s possible to use CC’s.
Both scenario require some editing in Kontakt. You need to add a converter that changes CC’s into notes. Further you need as many foot switches as key switches you want to use (so it can be up to 10 or even more)…
If you have a pedal that send note messages, it is as easy as connecting that pedal to the computer, opening a MIDI device, choose the pedal from the MIDI Device window list, and work out which notes to use on the pedal to trigger the appropriate key switches.
HelloDutti67 and LoFiLeiF - thank you very much for your prompt and very helpful answers! I think I’ll get along with this topic now! One last question - do you know, if the Boss EV 1 WL Pedal is able to send note messages? This does not get clear from the description or manual of this pedal … Best regards
@G.
Hi @gekapp
The EV 1 WL is a wireless expression pedal and doen not send note messages. (I have one myself and it is great for many purposes, but it is for CC messages.)
Hello LoFiLeiF - thank you for your important hint, it saved me from getting the “wrong” pedal. Is there any device, that you would recommend for sending note messages? (is the Behringer FCB-1010 - for example - useful?) Thank you for your advice in advance!
Regards@G.
Yes, from what I understand (I don’t have this myself though), you can send MIDI notes from the FCB-1010. You could check this out to see if this is indeed what you are looking for.
Hello LoFiLeif - thank you for your advice and links so far. I have bought a Behringer FCB 1010, and it works as Midi controller in my usual setting (Windows, Cubase 13, Steinberg UR 44 Interface, NI Komplete MK2 88 Keyboard)), sending cc s for example, and also MIDI notes.
Within my DAW, using the keyboard, the pedal board works perfectly as additional MIDI controller.
Referring to your video about Midi Guitar 3 and Midi Devices (the link in your message above) and following your instructions there, I tried to integrate the FCB Pedalboard as MIDI Device/Controller into Midi Guitar 3, using the stand alone as well as the DAW Version. Both attempts did not work - when using the stand alone version, pressing one of the knobs of the FCB1010 even caused a shut down/crash of the Midi Guitar 3 program.
Trying to use my keyboard as additional controller did not function in Midi Guitar 3 either, though I had “Any Controller” activated in the Midi Device module.
Is there any help that you could provide for me? Thank you very much in advance -
best wishes@G.
Oh,as I said I don’t have a FCB1010 myself, so I can’t provide much in the way of specific advice, I am afraid. But you haven’t had any luck with ANY controller? that seems strange. Mind you, it could be that we are on different versions of MG3, but I can certainly use my keyboard alongside my guitar to trigger keyswitches. But you should probably try to isolate potential culprits as much as you can when troubleshooting. For instance use just the FCB1010 for the MIDI device input (to begin with). If you want to try another keyboard, choose (only) that from the MIDI DEVICE list. Also bear in mind that this is still a beta, so it is not certain everything works as it should yet either.
About that crash. The only time I have experienced a crash lately, was when I tried to use my very old pocket sequencer Yamaha QY10 as a controller device through the MIDI DEVICE setup. It apparently sent a lot of program change messages that MG# wasn’t to keen on, so I had to try another controller instead. Could it be that your FCB1010 is sending out other messages thatn just notes or CCs?
Using the FCB1010 controller works fine for me. How did you connect it to your computer? I didn’t go through any soundcard or synth that is connected to the system, but bought a Roland UM-One MkII.
Edit:
It might have to do with the length of the SysEx messages your input device can not handle:
Dear Dutti, dear LoFiLeif.
thank you ever so much for your direct responses to my problems , I really do appreciate that! And it was helpful again: resetting my FCB 1010 to the factory settings did it. It now works perfectly with the standalone version of midi guitar 3.
Only one (last? ) problem in my DAW (Cubase 13) exists:
Having the “Midi Device” module within the “Midi Guitar Mini” Window established and Input-configurated/routed to my FCB1010 (or else to my Midi-Keyboard) - be it the specific or “any” input - , there are no signals on the track/channel, which indicate that the external Midi Controllers are working. I also tried to set up a “New Pattern” and to configurate it, again with no results …
Is the Midi Device module only working in the stand alone version or am I making mistakes again??
Best regards to you as my supporters and helpers
@G.
It’s always better to use the specific Midi device over “any”. Don’t forget to enable “monitor” of the Cubase Midi track.
Here your MIDI track receiving the output from MIDI Guitar:
This would be a MIDI track receiving messages from a foot controller and send it to MIDI Guitar:
Edit: and if you want to use an external keyboard just connect the output of the Midi track receiving data from MG3 to your keyboard (always switch on monitoring).
Hi Dutti,
thank you for your tipps! I followed your instructions (interesting: setting up a Midi Track for the Footcontroller, never did this before) , but having set up the devices in cubase (Midi Guitar Input Audio Track, Instrument Midi Track and Footcontroller Midi Track) with your proposed routings - still nothing happens, i.e. no signals from the Footcontroller like note on/off signals are taken. I also tried to establish the Midi Device Module within MG3, again with no result.
Using MG3 as Standalone, everything works fine. I am feeling a bit lost with the DAW settings at the moment, having followed your detailed hints with no results so far. Thanx again -
Best regards@G.
Hi Gekapp, did you check if Cubase receives midi signals from the FCB1010 at all? You can see this in the monitoring window at the very right bottom corner of the main window.
You can also insert a MIIDI Monitor under MIDI inserts.
What are you trying to control with your note on/off commands? I assume you have a VST on a separate track (not hosted in the MG3 plugin)? If so you need to route the FCB1010 to that plugin track .
Hello Dutti67,
sorry for the late answer, thank you for your patience.
My Cubase does receive the chosen presets with midi commands from the FCB1010 correctly, f.e. when i am setting up a VST instrument track, playing the instrument with my Midi keyboard and operating the FCB1010.
My setup:
- creating a mono audio Track for the guitar input
- inserting Midi Guitar 3 as an effect (showing the “Midi Guitar Mini” window)
- creating a VST instrument channel (for example an instrument from NI Kontakt 7), routing the Midi In to the Midi Guitar 3 Midi Out
works basically.
But within this setting , yet no signals from the FCB1010 are received - opposite to the Keyboard setting mentioned above.
I tried several routings, setting up a Midi channel for the Footcontroller like you did, also following your advice to route the FCB1010 to the plugin track (be it the MG3 plugin or the VST instrument track - I tried both) and also trying to add a Midi device module inside the Midi Guitar 3 plugin. All effortless …
Do you think there might be a chance left?
Best regards@G.
Hello Gekapp, I asked earlier, how did you connect the FCB1010 to your system and what exactly do you want to control? If you use the “Midi Guitar Mini” preset there isn’t a lot left to control inside the MG3 VST. If it works for me it must also work for you > there is always a chance!
Hi Dutti67,
it works now, I finally found out the right routings, following your tips and hints. Thank you for your advice and help!
Best regards@ G.
