Using pitchbend to control mpe pressure and rotary depth

instance 1 of mg3 sends pitchbend to bome, which translates it to a cc connected to pressure and rotary depth in instance 2 (set to chromatic so it doesn’t respond to the pitchbends).

a single string seems to work best, there’s still a lot of jitter though.

it is quite intuitive and it feels very natural to modify the string bend in order to manipulate pressure or effects.

the resolution is limited to 64 steps. it doesn’t work on open strings.

first half of the video is pressure only, second (much more fun) is both pressure and rotary depth. i’m using the surgext linnstrument mpe cello.

How interesting! I was just doing the same thing (i.e using the Pitch bends to modulate something else). I am working with the Logic Scripter, and i believe I have found a way to both:

  1. generate completely new envelopes for Pressure and CC74, with standard settings for decay and attack from the incoming Strike, Pitch and Pitch bends from whatever kind of controller you have that are sending these out on multiple channels (Jamstik, FTP).

but also:

  1. Control these (Pressure/CC74) together or separately with the incoming per-note pitch bend messages. So I have, in fact, real-time control over these MPE dimensions (CP and CC74) that I can add to the generated envelopes, or skip the envelopes and just use the per-note/per-channel control granted to me via the Pitch bends. For any instrument that doesn’t rely too heavily on the bends (GLIDE) aspect, but have a lot of things assigned to the other dimensions this is a really interesting concept.

This is what the Scripter looks like for anyone who is not surefamiliar with it.

Very cool! Not sure if this is useful, to you guys but there is a new PITCH modulation signal in the latest releases, for controlling something by bending.

Oh, I haven’t had the time to check that out yet. Sounds exciting. :star_struck: :+1:

Just wondering if it would be possible to implement this as a MIDI Machine within MG3? Is there still a plan to allow us to program our own as we could in MG2 @JamO ? Would make a great cross-platform solution!

@ SnowBlack, At some point, @JamO announced that programming with “LUA” would also be possible in MG3
