Using a wind instrument with a piezo pickup that sends audio signal. Will G2midi work the same as it does with guitar audio input?

This is something I have been confused about. I have always used MG2 with an audio interface unit, with the audio from my guitar going into my computer via a USB link. Does MG2 do the conversion to MIDI or has that already taken place in the interface? I had always presumed that MG2 accepted an analogue signal. am I correct? If it does then a piezo pickup should work, but might require a preamp to match the computers input to get a proper signal for the conversion.
