I recently decided that it might be a good idea to check out Windows after spending a decade on macOS. It seems many MG2/3 users here are on Windows now.
I have a couple of Macs: an older mid-2015 model and a 2020 M1 MacBook Air.
The M1 runs macOS 15.2. Also it runs Parallels 19 (VM) which uses Windows 11 (arm version), and CrossOver 24 (WINE) on the M1 for some critical applications that I can’t run natively in macOS. Under Parallels, this device is essentially a no-go for any audio apps as there is hardly support for Windows (arm). I couldn’t even get MG3 to work in CrossOver using AudioGridder. But, anyway, that’s highly experimental stuff.
The mid-2015 MacBook Pro runs OpenCore Legacy Patcher (allowing macOS15.2) and CrossOver 24. It purportedly supports Boot Camp installations of Windows 10 (not 11 as it won’t even recognize the Windows 11 .iso installer) but I couldn’t get 10 to install.
Anyway, after way too much tweaking and Googling I got Windows 11 installed on an Ex-FAT partition of the older Mac but I messed up the install due to spoofing the MacBook Pro model as 15,2 rather than 11,5 to enable universal control on the macOS side. This led to the installation of the spoofed device drivers in Windows and it all went arse up. Couldn’t even launch it after that.
So, I guess the TLDR question is:
Has anybody here:
- had any success with a Boot Camp install of Windows (either 10 or 11) on an Intel Mac?
- managed to get MG3 running on a working Boot Camp Windows 10/11 installation?
Edit 2025.01.26: For anyone interested, I managed to get a dual boot of macOS 15 and Windows 11 happening (and MG3 functioning correctly inside Windows 11) with fairly minimal effort after sleeping on it. Boot Camp 6 would not work though, so I had to resort to other means. Windows 11 is quite a snappy OS; it boots up quickly and so far any audio-MIDI applications I’ve briefly tested have been very responsive. All the applications that I’ve been struggling to get working on macOS in a VM are working in Windows 11 too.
