Microtonal (and other) tunings in MIDI Guitar 2

Ever wondered if you could change your MIDI output tuning on the the fly somehow? Perhaps to something exotic like a Harry Partch tuning?

hey is this possible on midi guitar 3? how to do it?
edit: it seems MIDI Fretlab doing similar thing but is more modern , should i pick it instead?

Yes, of course it is possible with MG3. The guy behind Entonal, which is what I am using here has created another really interesting little piece of software called Pitchgrid if your are interested.

My MIDI FretLab is a much more guitar centric attempt at giving us access to to microtonality. You change and rearrange the relationship between frets and pitches in every conceivable aspect of the physical guitar as we use it today. The MIDI Fretlab differs from other Microtuning software in that you can for example make use of the guitar’s ability to play the same pitch on several places on the fretboard. I can thus tune my guitar in both traditional 12TET (twelve-tone equal temperament) and some sort of interesting microtonal tuning or temperament. And I can also on a per-note-basis go in and adjust for any intonation issues you might have with a guitar’s hardware setup. This is simply not possible with something like Entonal or Pitchgrid, or Infinitone, which are all great at what they do.

So I wouldn’t see it as much as an either or. At this point, I don’t have a vast library of ways of coming up with the microtonal relationships I want to use for my guitar. That might come later, but this would be what I would use these other software for, inspiration. And (in my personal case) I would use these scales and relationships I certainly can’t come up with on my own with the Tool that is the FretLab, to make them make sense also for guitar.

As for now, the FretLab is till under development, but I will start testing it in a small scale on my Patreon to begin with, to keep the information exchange manageable. Feel free to come say hi over there if you are interested in the project. :waving_hand:
