Performance Shootout - USB v. GM-800 v. Ethernet

my goal is to gather reproducible and objective measurements.

  • for latency, 0.00msec will be set by the onset of sound from the 1/4” pickup. i’ll note the end to end latency of the various candidates over multiple captures on multiple strings.
  • accuracy will be based on the count of incorrect, missed or ghost notes.

i’ll emulate the joness speed tests and use his approach to report averages as well as the raw data.

i’ll setup the test environment over the month of march and leave it up for april. i’ll try to capture several guitarists with varied midi experience. if you’re near nyc and you’d like to be one of the victims please get in touch.

i’ll also compare mg3hex alt tuning to the gm-800.

let me know if there is anything else to add or if there are any flaws in my planned methodology. once we know more about the new hex trackers we can decide which one(s) to include.

Hi @Kimyo, that’s a very good idea! Would you also take such measurements for bass guitars? That would be very useful, as there is very little information of this kind available for bass guitars.

bass-wise i have a short scale fretless with individual piezo pickups. i don’t recall if midi bass has a hex tracker?

the fretless currently is strung as a piccolo bass (all strings 1 octave up). in my experience, most people won’t go back to standard tuning once they’ve experienced the piccolo response. the latency is just too high with standard strings.

but i’ll try to restring the fretless and include it. i probably won’t pickup a gk5b just for these tests though, so it’ll just be usb/dante.

The MidiGuitar3 Hex should also be able to handle bass down to B0, says @JamO.

I myself have a short scale 5-string Talman TMB-35 bass, which I want to equip with a divided pickup from Ubertar, but I’m not sure yet where to position the pickup.

I have 2 basses with GK5 hex pickups I use with MG3 hex down to E1. JamO is looking into the issue with it going down to B0. Bass hex pickups work fine with regular MG3 hex but low frequency detection is much slower. I have gone back to using a piccolo strung bass for better latency.

i need to unpack some tools and parts, including an ubertar pickup. if time allows i’ll put it in both of the existing cavities and record a few bits.

without getting too out there, it is a joyful thing to play phat bass synth sounds with abandon on a piccolo bass. the latency with standard strings requires much more precision and i end up thinking instead of playing.

another really fine thing is prehm’s ‘unconventional’ trick. it could well be the most responsive bass synth of all time.

it’s finally warmed up enough to spend time in the detached garage i use as a studio.

i’ll start moving the equipment out there this week.

@lpspecial - if you have any comments or suggested alterations to the setup please speak up now. let’s settle any potential disagreement before i start the tests.

i will also record the sustain length of held notes (midi output), as that issue has come up.

less certain is if i will do any comparison between mg3 and mg3hex, unless there is a call for that.
